Off-cycle Internship in Investment Banks

Off-cycle Internship
September 6, 2022

Eligibility/ Intro

Off-Cycle Internships are 4, 6, or 12-month programs for undergraduate students in their penultimate, final, or recent years after graduated. There are similar programs for students in their postgraduate or MBA studies. Typically, eligible students are in their final or penultimate year and will graduate coming or the next summer. Students who have already done a summer internship in the same firm or have an internship in a relative industry have higher conversion potential. Also, look out for target schools of the firm.

End of Studies internships is generally 6-month internships popular in Europe. These are for students who have recently graduated. The starting can be in the summer or winter of the same year. The goal is to convert selected students to full-time roles. Again, someone who has relevant experience or has done a summer program with the firm earlier stands an advantage.

So start early and stay on track!

Pedagogy:

Due to the longer nature of these internships, you not only get the opportunity to be a part of an industry or product-focused team but also have the possibility to work on inter-division projects. This gives ample time to find your fit within the firm as well as develop healthy relationships that are key to your career ahead.

For example, as an Investment Banking off-cycle intern your responsibilities might include:

· Creating and keeping up with sophisticated financial models

· Doing extensive and detailed research on businesses and industries.

· Managing many tasks at once and working well both alone and in a team.

· Doing different financial assessments, such as merger effects analysis and value analysis

· Creation of presentations and other client products

It is always beneficial to have prior training to perform your best in the internship so that your chances of conversion to a full-time role are improved.

End Results:

End of studies internships has a higher probability of converting into a full-time role than their off-cycle counterparts. Nevertheless, such internships are a foot in the door for the industry you wish to work in. The majority of full-time entry-level positions prefer someone who has done an internship in a relative function or industry. In competitive full-time positions, it becomes highly improbable for someone without relevant full-time or internship experience.

Timeline:

The major competitive programs start their recruitment process a year before. For example, the recruitment for a position starting in summer 2023 starts in summer 2022. Sometimes it can be 2/3 years in advance. Attending relevant insight programs and student meet-ups helps here. You can also find a finance association that tracks the open positions and their deadlines.

Early applications stand a better chance of converting to the next rounds, as the process is like a funnel.

Application Process:

There are three main steps to applying for an internship in investment banking:

  • Resume:

Submitting your resume online or through contacts you have made. In some companies, you might need to add a Cover Letter or write additional essays to explain your motivations.

CP: An engaging Resume that can only clear the ATS but also make you stand out in the thousands of applications that these programs receive is critical. Unless you're up to the mark, sometimes rejection can reach you within 2 hrs.

CS through its experience and live support of IB professionals multiplies your chances of getting through this round. With the extensive literature and continuous content to increase your commercial awareness, you can write a CL that clicks with the recruiter.

  • First-round

The first-round interview is generally a recorded Hire Vue interview where you answer 4/5 questions for ½ minutes each. You can easily find some of the most common questions with a quick Google Search. The answers to these questions should make you stand out and match the profile set the program is looking for.

There might be additional interview rounds according to the firm.

CS: First impressions last and make or break your application. These are the short online interactions that serve as silos to find the most committed candidates. Expressing your ideas in the right formats and understanding what the recruiters are looking for here can make a huge difference.

A responsive community of people in the same process creates a resource for doubt solving and pre-interview tips. An IB mentor assigned to you takes mock interviews to find your strengths and weaknesses. Also, mock recordings of our successful candidates give you an edge in your preparation.

  • Being invited to attend a Superday/assessment centre.

These are day-long events consisting of a mix of fit interviews along with Case Studies.

CS: Although you might skirt competency-based questions in the earlier rounds, they must be faced head-on here. We guide you through exactly what a fit-based interview looks for. Our 15- hr live technical training ensures that critical technical areas are understood at an IB level. Live support and the community promises full support for your mock case studies.

Tips to stand out:

  • Stay engaged & Network:

The IB application process is a matter of perseverance rather than just skills. A candidate that stays true to the path and constantly improves himself stands the best chance. For this, it's best to join a community, listen to podcasts, read blogs and subscribe to newsletters that grow commercial awareness and give application tips.

  • Apply Early:

An event attendance can lead to a summer Insight. A summer insight can lead to a summer internship. A summer internship can lead to an off-cycle or a full-time position itself. Every level increases your probability to get accepted in the next. You get the idea!

  • Prepare:

As competitive as these positions are it is easy to get lost and discouraged after a few attempts. The amount of information available online can be overwhelming and downright contradictory. It's essential to stay positive and surround yourself with people that believe in you. Before accepting any advice we must check the credibility and context of the source.

Without a doubt the journey is tough, you just have to be tougher!
